Why I Wouldn’t Recommend Amazon FBA to Seniors
Years ago, I sold books on Amazon through their FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) program.
For a long time, it worked.
I followed the rules.
I built inventory.
I ran a legitimate small business.
Then one day, without meaningful explanation, my account was deactivated.
Everything stopped.
Years of work were suddenly locked behind an automated system that offered very little human support or clarity.
That experience changed how I view Amazon — especially for seniors.
When a Platform Controls Your Business
One of the hardest things about selling on a large platform is this:
You don’t own the relationship.
You don’t control the rules.
And you don’t get due process in the way small business owners expect.
When Amazon closes an account, it often happens:
suddenly
without meaningful dialogue
through automated systems
with overseas customer service that cannot explain decisions
That’s not a criticism of the people — it’s a reality of how massive platforms operate.
Why This Matters More for Seniors
Younger entrepreneurs may be able to absorb:
sudden shutdowns
frozen funds
appeal delays
starting over
For seniors, those risks feel very different.
Many of us:
rely on predictable income
can’t afford months of appeals
don’t want battles with automated systems
value stability over scale
A platform that can end your business with a few keystrokes is not a good fit for most retirees.
Unexpected Charges After Closure
Another issue I personally experienced was this:
Even after my Amazon account was closed, attempts were made to withdraw money from my checking account — with no clear explanation.
That forced me to:
cancel authorizations
close accounts
protect my finances
This kind of situation is especially stressful for seniors, because it creates:
fear
confusion
and a feeling of being powerless against a giant system
Why I Chose to Walk Away
Two years ago, I made a decision to completely cut ties with Amazon as a selling platform.
Not out of anger — but out of realism.
The platform had become:
difficult to deal with
unpredictable
and not designed for small, independent sellers anymore
Especially not older ones who want clarity, respect, and stability.
A Caution, Not a Condemnation
Amazon may still work for some sellers.
But I would never suggest it as a starting point for seniors who are looking for:
a calm business
predictable systems
fair communication
or personal control
There are far better ways for retirees to build income without putting their livelihood in the hands of an algorithm.
The Takeaway
This isn’t about bitterness.
It’s about awareness.
Before any senior invests time, money, or hope into a platform like Amazon FBA, they deserve to understand:
how little control they will have
how difficult support can be
and how sudden shutdowns can be
Caution is not fear. It’s wisdom.
