Why My Wife and I Enjoy Staying Home More Than We Used To. The Porch
Our Front Porch: Where Date Night Often Begins
One of our favorite places isn’t a restaurant, a theater, or a vacation destination.
It’s our front porch.
Over the years, our front porch has become a gathering place for family, friends, and neighbors. Some evenings it’s just my wife and me sitting together, enjoying the fresh air and talking about our day. Other times, neighbors stop by for a visit, and what was supposed to be a quiet evening turns into a small get-together filled with laughter and conversation.
In many ways, our front porch has become where date night begins.
Before we watch a movie, enjoy a television series, or settle in for the evening, we often spend time outside together. There’s something relaxing about slowing down, watching the neighborhood, and enjoying each other’s company without distractions.
These moments remind me that some of the best parts of life aren’t expensive or complicated.
They’re simple.
A comfortable chair.
A conversation with someone you love.
A visit from a good neighbor.
A peaceful evening at home.
Those are the moments that often end up meaning the most.
If someone had told me 30 years ago that some of my favorite days would be spent at home, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Back then, life was busy. Between work, family responsibilities, home projects, and countless commitments, there never seemed to be enough hours in the day.
Like many people, I often thought enjoyment meant going somewhere, doing something, or staying busy.
Today, my perspective has changed.
The truth is, my wife and I enjoy staying home more than we used to—and we’ve discovered that some of life’s best moments happen right where we are.
Home Feels Different Now
Part of it comes with age.
After years of working, raising a family, and building a life together, home becomes more than just a place to sleep at night.
It becomes a place filled with memories.
Every room has a story.
Every photograph reminds us of a special moment.
Every family gathering adds another chapter to the life we’ve built together.
Home feels comfortable because it represents a lifetime of experiences.
We Appreciate Simplicity More
When we were younger, we were always moving.
There were places to go, schedules to keep, and responsibilities to manage.
Today, we appreciate simpler pleasures.
A quiet morning coffee.
A conversation on the porch.
Watching the birds outside the window.
Reading a good book.
Enjoying a favorite movie together.
These moments may seem small, but they often bring more satisfaction than many of the things we once rushed around to do.
We Enjoy Spending Time Together
After more than 55 years of marriage, one of the greatest blessings in my life is simply spending time with my wife.
We don’t need elaborate plans to enjoy ourselves.
Sometimes the best evenings are the simplest ones.
We might watch a movie, enjoy a television series, talk about our children and grandchildren, or simply sit together and enjoy a peaceful evening at home.
The activity itself isn’t what matters most.
What matters is being together.
Less Stress, More Enjoyment
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that enjoyment often increases when stress decreases.
As we’ve gotten older, we’ve become less interested in complications and more interested in comfort.
We enjoy routines that are simple.
We appreciate technology that works without frustration.
We value experiences that help us relax rather than create more stress.
Life feels better when it becomes a little less complicated.
Entertainment Has Become Easier
One thing that has helped us enjoy staying home is having easy access to entertainment.
Whether it’s watching a classic movie, discovering a new television series, or revisiting an old favorite, relaxing at home has become one of our favorite ways to spend an evening.
Instead of rushing out the door, we can simply settle in, enjoy our time together, and create a relaxing atmosphere right in our own living room.
Home Is Where Many of Life’s Best Moments Happen
Society often tells us that happiness is somewhere else.
A different destination.
A bigger house.
A busier schedule.
A more exciting plan.
But I’ve come to believe that many of life’s greatest joys happen much closer to home.
A conversation with someone you love.
A family visit.
A relaxing evening.
A shared laugh.
A favorite movie.
A quiet moment of gratitude.
These experiences don’t require a plane ticket or an elaborate plan.
They simply require us to appreciate the moment we’re in.
Final Thoughts
My wife and I still enjoy traveling and experiencing new things.
In fact, we’re always looking forward to our next adventure.
But we’ve also learned that happiness doesn’t always require going somewhere.
Sometimes the best moments happen right at home.
As we’ve gotten older, we’ve learned to appreciate comfort, simplicity, and time spent together.
And honestly, that’s one of the greatest gifts of this stage of life.
Home isn’t where we’re missing out.
Home is where we’re enjoying life.
